About ILSI South Africa

  • The branch was launched in 1997 with a Symposium on “Nutrition and Disease” at which a number of eminent local and overseas scientists spoke on the health implications of over- and under-nutrition.
  • By supporting three mini symposia on dietary carbohydrates.
  • By providing financial assistance to Food Technology students who would not otherwise have been able to attend the biennial Congresses of the South African Association of Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) held in Pretoria in 1997 and in Cape Town in 1999.
  • Through sponsorship of the "Nutrition in Transition" and “Fats and Oils – Forbidden Fruits but Essential Nutrients” symposia during the Nutrition Congresses in 1998 and 2000.
  • By supporting the World Clean Air Congress held in Durban in September 1998, both scientifically and by assisting a number of students to attend.
  • ILSI South Africa provides ongoing scientific input to the Food Legislation Advisory Group (FLAG), which was formed by the Directorate: Food Control of the Department of Health to advise it on proposed food legislation.
  • The ILSI Human Nutrition Institute, located in ILSI's Washington, D.C., headquarters, administers the International Vitamin A Consultative Group (IVACG), which held the XIX IVACG Meeting in Durban in March 1999. ILSI South Africa sponsored a Workshop on Urban Nutrition immediately preceding this meeting.
  • By arranging 2000 copies of the ILSI Europe Concise Monograph “Food Biotechnology – an Introduction” for distribution on a selective basis to schools and other groups. Subsequently the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) has chosen to use the booklet in training activities in numerous Southern African countries.
  • Because of considerable evidence of the widespread use of abused cooking oils, the Directorate of Food Control of the Dept of Health requested ILSI SA’s assistance in the preparation of a training manual on such frying oils suitable for use by Environmental Health Officers. After reviewing documents available locally and finding them unsuitable for the purpose, the trustees commissioned the preparation of a purpose-written manual.
  • The very topical subject of the re-use of Process Water in the Food and Beverage Industries was the subject of a symposium in November 2000 held in conjunction with the University of Pretoria, the International Water Association and the African Center for Energy and the Environment.
  • Arising from a paper presented at this symposium, ILSI is currently supporting the production of a monograph including illustrations and case studies on the application of the technique of “Water Pinch” in the food and beverage industry.
